THE GEOLOGIC TIME: EONS, ERAS, PERIODS & EPOCHS
Earth’s geologic time span is almost unfathomable to humans. This is because our lifespan is so short compared to the entire lifespan of the Earth.
• Minutes, hours, days, months, years, decades, and centuries are the units of measurement for us.
• However, the Earth operates on a scale of hundreds of thousands to millions of years.
So how are these past events measured in terms of time? Geoscientists have devised a variety of methods for estimating time. There are two types of dates: ‘relative’ and ‘numerical’ (‘absolute’). Relative dates are used to correlate events from one location to another, including human activity as documented in the archaeological record. The reconstruction of Earth history is possible thanks to correlation, or deducing events that happened at the same time in various areas.
